Botulinum Toxin TypeA (or Botox® as it's commonly known)

Botox/Vistabel® or Bocoture® is a simple, nonsurgical, medical practitioner administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe lines. It is also used for excessive sweating (Hyperhydrosis). In 2002, it was approved for improving and relaxing frown lines in the area between the eyes on the forehead and has been used successfully in more than half a million people since that time. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Botox® contains a naturally occurring protein that has it's origins in bacteria. The protein is purified and it is safe to use for injection by a medically qualified practitioner.

Why is it used

Lines and wrinkles are a normal part of the aging process. As we get older the structure of the skin changes, we loose the elasticity and we have less collagen in our skin. The result ofLady having Botox injected this is that our skin becomes less supple and flexible, and does not 'spring' back into place as quickly, when it is creased or pinched. The fat cells reduce over time and the oil and sebaceous (sweat) glands, which keep the skin moisturised, become less active, making the skin appear dry. The facial muscles begin to sag, and the skin 'folds' and creases. When our facial muscles are used repeatedly to smile, laugh and frown etc, the skin becomes constantly creased in those areas, thus a line or wrinkle is formed.

If we reduce movement in those areas the skin actually stops being creased and its then given time to recover, which in turn causes the lines to become softer and sometimes even fade away. When injected with Botox® the areas being treated are temporarily inactivated allowing them not be overused. The result is a softer more relaxed and pleasant appearance.

In the first year or so frequent treatments (3 - 4 monthly) are required to re-educate the muscles and the more treatments that you have, the less frequent (6 monthly) treatments you may need, until, possibly, a yearly maintenance is all that you may require. The injection is administered by trained medical practitioners and is available only by prescription.

The consultation and treatment

At your initial appointment you will fill in a medical consultation form and any questions that you may have will be answered, then your expectations before and after treatment will be discussed. After the initial consultation you will be told if the treatment is suitable for you.

In line with guidelines set out by the MHRA and legislation, a medical consultation will be carried out by Dr Mark Harrison of Harley Aesthetics, London. Treatment will be booked for date and time to suit you. A post treatment checklist will be discussed and we will aim to see you again within 14 days post treatment to ensure satisfaction.

No anaesthetic is required, the needle is very fine and most people do not find it painful, however if you prefer the area to be numbed topical anaesthetic can be applied prior to injection. The areas to be treated will be marked out after careful examination of the muscles. Only minute amounts of BOTOX® is injected to each area. A common misconception is that BOTOX® actually paralyzes the muscles in the face. Although, with extreme amounts of BOTOX® this can happen, most practitioners strive to inject the smallest amount that allows you to have some limited activity but not so much that you have overactivity of the areas. It is important to know that BOTOX® is not used to keep people from expressing themselves but simply to keep them from making facial grimaces and frowns that have become habits and are unintended. When done correctly, most people will not notice that a BOTOX® procedure has been performed but simply that the person looks more rested or happier.

The whole process takes around 20-30 min and you are ready to go back to your normal duties. It is advised that you refrain from any strenuous exercise immediately after your treatment, but other than that you may continue as any other day. It is recommended that you do not take any NSAIDS (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for a few weeks prior to and a few weeks following treatment. NSAIDS can contribute to bruising and cause a more bleeding or bruisng than normal. Results will be evident within 5-10 days, but it can take up to 14days for the full effect to be complete.

Some common side effects of treatment are temporary eyelid droop, headache, nausea, slight redness, inflammation, bruising at the injection sites, tenderness and localised pain. Results can be seen within days but may take the full 14 days to see effect. Any tenderness or bruising can be alleviated with the use of arnica cream or ointment applied to the area. It is strongly advised that NSAIDS are NOT used to relieve any pain. Drugs, such as asprin or ibuprofen can cause bleeding or bruising.

If the patient is allergic to eggs, it is very important not to use this material because it is prepared with an albumin (egg) base. Additionally, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding BOTOX® is not recommended. It is also not recommended for anyone suffering from neurologic disease and degenerative muscle diease.
